About

This prickly, herbaceous shrub is easily recognised by its deeply lobed leaves and striking spherical, yellow fruits that persist on the plant. While visually appealing, the fruits contain toxic compounds and have a long history of traditional medicinal use.

Where it works in Kilifi

Thriving in full sun and various soil types, this hardy plant is excellent for dryland restoration, informal hedges, or as a barrier due to its thorns. Space plants approximately 1.5-2 metres apart to allow for spread.

Growing notes

This fast-growing species is remarkably drought-tolerant once established, requiring very little supplemental watering. Exercise caution as the attractive fruits are poisonous if ingested by humans or animals.
