About
This perennial, spiny shrub or small tree typically grows 0.2–2 metres tall, featuring stems armed with curved prickles and ovate to lanceolate leaves covered in stellate hairs. It produces pale to deep purple flowers and globose, yellow-orange berries, 1.5–3 cm in diameter, which are highly toxic if ingested. It commonly inhabits disturbed sites, grasslands, and coastal scrub throughout eastern and southern Africa.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for restoration of disturbed coastal areas, sand dunes, or as a hardy, spiny barrier hedge in full sun. It tolerates a range of soils and is well-adapted to seasonally dry tropical biomes.

This species is tough and requires low care, thriving with consistent moisture, though it adapts well to arid conditions once established. It flowers and fruits year-round, but all parts of the plant, especially the unripe fruits, are toxic to humans and livestock.
