About
Sida cordifolia is an erect perennial subshrub, typically growing 0.3 to 2 meters tall, covered in soft white, felt-like hairs. Its leaves are broadly ovate to heart-shaped with toothed margins. The plant produces small, solitary, axillary yellow flowers, sometimes with a darker orange center.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full, direct sun and well-draining loamy soil. In a Kilifi-coast garden, it can be used for restoration in disturbed areas, though its weed potential means careful placement and management are necessary.
Growing notes
A fast-growing perennial, it is heat and drought-tolerant once established, needing water when the soil is almost dry. It readily self-sows, so deadhead flowers to prevent unwanted spread, as it is considered an invasive weed in many regions. It is toxic if ingested due to ephedrine content.
