About
This is a shrub or small tree, typically growing up to 4 metres tall, native to East Africa including Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, and Tanzania. It features yellow, five-petalled flowers arranged in racemes. The plant produces small, black seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy-loam soils, tolerating a wide range of rainfall. It can be utilised in Kilifi as a specimen plant, for light shade, as a live fence, or in restoration efforts for dry woodlands and savannas.
Growing notes
A fast-growing perennial, Senna longiracemosa is low maintenance and becomes drought tolerant once established, preferring the soil to dry between waterings. Seeds benefit from scarification or soaking in warm water prior to sowing, with germination taking one week to three months. It is sensitive to waterlogged conditions.
