View in catalogue →About
This semi-deciduous shrub or small tree typically grows 2-6 metres tall, featuring pale grey, smooth bark. It produces abundant, sweetly scented pink to purple flowers during early summer. The distinctive fruit is a round nut with a single, membranous wing, which changes from purplish-green to pale straw-coloured when mature.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in full sun and adaptable to light, well-drained, acidic to mildly alkaline soils, this species is suitable for a Kilifi-coast garden. It can serve as an ornamental specimen, be incorporated into hedges, or used in restoration projects given its natural resilience to bush fires.
Growing notes
Propagation is best achieved from fresh, processed seeds or root cuttings. Once established, it requires regular watering in summer but becomes more drought-tolerant during winter months. This species is sensitive to frost, and all parts, particularly the roots, are toxic if ingested in excess.
