About
This indigenous species is a shrub or small tree, capable of reaching up to 5 metres in height. Native to southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania, it typically grows in moist coastal forests, woodlands, and forest margins at altitudes between 0 and 500 metres. Its flowers are yellow to orange, featuring purple and pinkish bracts, and appear in axillary and terminal spikes.
Where it works in Kilifi
This plant thrives in semi-shaded to shaded garden areas, ideally beneath a tree canopy, mimicking its natural understory habitat. It prefers rich, well-drained soil, benefitting from a thick layer of organic mulch. It can serve as an understory specimen or for forest restoration projects.
Growing notes
Once established, it requires a moderate and consistent water supply. Regular mulching with compost or other organic matter will support its nutrient needs and emulate its natural forest floor conditions.
