Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra is a medium to large deciduous tree, typically growing 9-18m tall, with a single stem and a dense, spreading crown. Its grey bark characteristically peels off in flat, round disks, revealing light yellow tissue beneath. The tree produces fleshy, plum-like fruits that ripen from pale green to yellow, containing a tart, sweet, and refreshing juicy pulp with a hard, multi-compartmented stone.
Where it works in Kilifi
This subspecies is highly salt tolerant and thrives in full sun and well-drained sandy or sandy loam soils, making it ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens. It serves excellently as a shade tree, specimen plant, or for restoration purposes in wooded grasslands and bushlands.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, it can achieve a growth rate of up to 1.5m per year, especially when young and adequately watered. Once established, it is moderately drought-resistant, requiring moderate water. It is frost sensitive, so ensure a warm, frost-free environment for optimal growth. For fruit production, both male and female trees are generally required.
