About
This bulbous perennial herb is renowned for its spectacular, spherical inflorescence, measuring 4-6 inches across, composed of hundreds of densely-packed, vibrant red florets with prominent yellow stamens. Its bright green, spirally arranged leaves, up to 15 inches long, emerge after the striking flower head, which is borne on a succulent stem. Following flowering, tiny orange-scarlet berries develop. All parts of the plant are toxic.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi gardens in dappled shade or locations receiving morning sun and afternoon shade, ensuring protection from harsh midday sun. Plant in well-drained, organically rich soil, either directly in the ground or in containers where it thrives when root-bound. Space bulbs approximately 15 cm apart for mass plantings.
Growing notes
This plant exhibits a high growth rate and is relatively low maintenance. It requires consistent moisture during the growing season, in well-drained soil, but reduce watering during its winter dormancy. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so handle with care and keep away from children and pets.
