About
This deciduous to evergreen tree grows to 12-25 metres tall, featuring a dense, globose crown. Its pinnate leaves bear 2-3 pairs of elliptic-lance shaped leaflets with pointed tips. Small, greenish-white flowers appear in terminal panicles, followed by 2-3 lobed fleshy fruits which turn hard and smooth when mature and contain black seeds. The fruit pulp is rich in saponins and is traditionally used as a natural cleanser for hair, skin, and laundry.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in full sun and a wide range of well-drained soils, including loamy or clayey loam. It serves well as a specimen tree for shade, and can also be considered for agroforestry or avenue planting, with a recommended spacing of 6-8 metres.
Growing notes
A moderate-growing tree, it can take 6-10 years to produce fruit from seed. Once established, it is very drought tolerant, though it benefits from regular watering, allowing the soil to dry slightly between applications to prevent root rot. Seeds typically require scarification or soaking in hot water for successful germination.
