About
An acaulescent and rhizomatous perennial, this species typically forms clusters of 1-5 erect-spreading, lanceolate leaves. The upper leaf surface is smooth and shiny dark green with grey-green blotches, while the lower surface is dull grey-green and rough to the touch. Leaves can reach approximately 40 cm in length and 6 cm wide, featuring brownish, fibrous margins. It produces a simple, spike-like inflorescence 15-24 cm tall, bearing 1-2 greenish-white flowers per cluster.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to southeastern Kenya, including the Kilifi District, this plant thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. It requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, and should be protected from direct midday sun to prevent leaf scorching. Ideal for use as a specimen plant or in restoration efforts, it naturally forms dense clumps through spreading rhizomes, allowing for moderate spacing in a garden or landscape setting.
Growing notes
This is a generally slow-growing plant that is highly drought-tolerant; allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, especially during winter, as overwatering is detrimental. It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11 and is generally low-maintenance and resilient. Caution should be exercised as the plant is toxic to pets.
