About
This small perennial succulent forms rosettes of stiff, recurved, nearly cylindrical leaves, typically 6-12 cm long and dark green with distinct lighter green cross-banding. Each leaf features a red-brown spiny tip and a groove on its upper surface. It spreads by above-ground, spider-like stolons that root to form new plants, potentially creating dense stands. Greenish-white flowers, about 2.5 cm long, appear clustered on erect racemes up to 15 cm tall.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to coastal Kenya, this plant thrives in semi-shade or shade but can tolerate bright light and even full sun, with optimal flowering in brighter conditions. It is ideal for containers, hanging baskets, or as a groundcover specimen in well-drained, gritty soil.
Growing notes
A slow-growing and low-maintenance succulent, it requires well-drained soil and is drought-tolerant, needing infrequent watering once established, especially during winter. It prefers warm temperatures, being sensitive to conditions below 10°C. This plant is reported to be toxic to pets if ingested.
