About
This large, semi-deciduous tree is recognisable by its broad, umbrella-shaped crown, often wider than its height. It features fern-like bipinnate leaves that fold at night and during rain, and fluffy pinkish-white flowers with red stamens, frequently blooming in the dry season. The tree produces flat, black pods containing a sweet, edible pulp and is valued for its excellent shade and nitrogen-fixing ability in the soil.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for the Kenyan coast, this species thrives in humid lowlands with well-watered soils and full sun. Given its expansive canopy, it is ideal for large public areas, parks, roadsides, or as a specimen tree in spacious gardens, requiring ample room for its crown which can spread over 12 metres.
Growing notes
The Rain tree is a moderately fast-growing species, though initial growth can be slow before becoming vigorous. While young trees require regular watering, established plants are notably drought tolerant, though they do not withstand prolonged dry periods. It prefers warm temperatures and is sensitive to frost.
