About
This versatile plant grows as a shrub, a small tree, or often as a woody climber (liane), capable of reaching up to 25 metres when scandent. It features glossy dark green leaves, small yellow to greenish-yellow flowers borne in axillary clusters, and smooth, globose, orange to orange-red fruits measuring 1.2-3 cm in diameter. It naturally occurs in evergreen and deciduous forests, as well as subcoastal scrub and fringing forests along the East African coast.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or dappled shade, and prefers well-draining sandy soils. As a liane, it requires structural support, making it suitable for growing over trellises or along fences for a naturalised look in a restoration area.
Growing notes
Growth can be slow, particularly from seed. Once established, it exhibits notable drought tolerance, requiring watering every 2-3 weeks, allowing the soil to partially dry out between sessions. Ensure consistent warm temperatures and high humidity, avoiding waterlogged conditions.
