About
A strong forest liana, growing up to 30 metres long, which exudes white sticky latex when cut. It features glossy, leathery, ovate to elliptic leaves and fragrant white flowers with yellow throats, borne in clusters. The plant produces edible, subglobose fruits that ripen from green to orange-yellow, containing a sweet-sour yellow pulp with numerous seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi coast gardens, this liana thrives in partial to full shade and prefers fertile, moist soils, although it tolerates a variety of soil types. It is suitable as an ornamental climber for shady areas, a live fence, or for riparian erosion control, growing well in coastal and riverine habitats.
Growing notes
This vine grows vigorously and can be propagated from seed or cuttings. Established plants require moderate to high water, reflecting its natural preference for moist forest and coastal areas with 900-2000 mm mean annual rainfall. Seeds benefit from de-pulping and cleaning for successful germination, with high germination rates.
