About
Plants in the Rytigynia genus are often found as shrubs or small trees in tropical and southern Africa. Many species exhibit smooth bark, which may peel to reveal paler underlayers, and bear opposite leaves that can feature small hair-tuft domatia on their undersides. Flowers are typically small, greenish-cream or pale greenish-yellow, and emerge in axillary clusters. These mature into small, fleshy, subglobose fruits that turn black when ripe.
Where it works in Kilifi
This shrub would likely thrive in a Kilifi-coast garden, preferring partially shaded to full sun conditions in well-drained, sandy soils typical of the region. It can be effectively used for understorey planting or integrated into native hedges.
Growing notes
Some Rytigynia species have demonstrated a relatively fast growth rate to reproductive maturity under certain conditions. Once established, plants in this genus generally prefer consistent moisture, although some can tolerate drier woodland environments.
