About
Minnieroot is a low-growing perennial herb, typically reaching 30-60 cm in height, distinguished by its thick, fusiform tuberous roots. It features opposite, elliptic, glossy green leaves and produces showy, funnel-shaped, violet to bluish-purple flowers that open in the morning and close by afternoon. The plant's most notable characteristic is its spindle-shaped seed pods, which burst open with a popping sound when wet, dispersing numerous seeds. Native to tropical Americas, it has naturalised across tropical Africa, including coastal Kenya.

This ornamental herb thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil; it tolerates sandy, poor soils. It is suitable for container planting or as a naturalised border in a Kilifi-coast garden, but caution should be exercised as it spreads readily.
