About
This deciduous scrambling shrub or small tree can reach up to 6 metres in height. It features imparipinnate leaves with multiple pairs of bright green leaflets, often folded downwards. Fragrant white to yellow flowers emerge before the new leaves, followed by reddish-brown capsules that split open to reveal seeds encased in a bright orange-red pseudo-aril.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for Kilifi Coast gardens, this plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy coastal soils. It can be used effectively in mixed borders, as a screening plant, or for ecological restoration in dry thickets and woodland margins.
Growing notes
Once established, this species is relatively drought-tolerant, adapting to seasonally dry tropical conditions. While specific growth rates are not detailed, some Rourea species are known to be poisonous; therefore, caution should be exercised.
