About
This small tree or shrub can reach up to 10 metres tall, featuring narrowly to broadly elliptic leaves with small pit domatia. It produces solitary, strongly scented white to greenish-yellow flowers, marked with red to purple spots in the throat. The fruits are ellipsoid to globose, green with pale spots, and measure 4–8 cm long.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to Eastern Kenya, this species thrives in tropical coastal gardens. It can serve as an understorey plant or specimen, preferring well-drained, slightly acidic soil and dappled to bright indirect sunlight.
Growing notes
Expect a moderately fast growth rate, potentially flowering within a few years. Once established, it requires consistent moisture but dislikes waterlogged conditions and shows some drought tolerance. Protect from frost, although this is not a concern in the tropical Kilifi climate.
