About

This small to medium-sized tree is indigenous to East Africa, often found in the understory of forests or along their margins. It produces charming clusters of small, fragrant white to cream flowers, followed by characteristic capsular fruits.

Where it works in Kilifi

In Kilifi, it excels in partial shade or dappled sunlight, ideally in well-drained, humus-rich soil, making it perfect for understorey planting or a small specimen in a shadier garden corner. It can contribute to a layered forest garden aesthetic.

Growing notes

This species has a moderate growth rate and, once established, is quite resilient, requiring only occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. Protect young plants from intense direct sun; it is generally hardy in the warm coastal climate.
