About
Rhodopentas bussei is a multi-branched deciduous shrub or small tree, typically growing 0.6–2.5 metres tall, occasionally up to 4 metres. It features ovate to ovate-oblong leaves, finely hairy especially underneath, and produces clusters of vibrant scarlet or crimson flowers year-round. The fruit is a 10-ribbed, oblong to obovoid capsule up to 6 mm long.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in coastal and dry bushland habitats, making it suitable for Kilifi gardens. It prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soils and tolerates a range from full sun to partial shade, serving well as an ornamental specimen or in pollinator gardens.
Growing notes
This deciduous shrub produces its vibrant red to orange flowers year-round. It requires regular watering, especially when young, but is adapted to seasonally dry conditions once established. Protect from frost.
