About
This evergreen tree, typically 10-25 metres tall, is distinguished by its prominent aerial stilt roots that arch from the trunk and branches, anchoring it in soft, muddy substrates. Its glossy, dark green, leathery leaves have a distinctive pointed tip with a hair-like appendage, and the creamy-white flowers develop into viviparous propagules that germinate on the parent tree. It plays a vital role in coastal ecosystems by stabilising shorelines and providing crucial habitat for marine life.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal restoration projects, especially in intertidal mudflats, estuaries, and creek edges in Kilifi, where it provides shoreline stabilisation and vital marine habitat. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires consistent tidal inundation in deep, soft mud; space propagules approximately 0.5 metres apart for establishment.
Growing notes
This slow-growing mangrove is best propagated from its viviparous seedlings, which can be established in nursery conditions using freshwater irrigation before planting in their permanent saline, tidally-inundated coastal habitat. While robust in its natural environment, protect young propagules from crab damage during establishment.
