About
This briefly deciduous tree typically grows 3-10 metres tall, occasionally reaching 20 metres. It features elliptic, shiny green leaves and grey, smooth bark that can appear net-like. Unpleasantly scented, creamy-white to yellow flowers develop into distinctive greenish-yellow fruits with two or three wings.
Where it works in Kilifi
This indigenous species is well-suited for coastal Kilifi gardens and restoration projects, thriving in full sun to partial shade. It prefers sandy soils and is ideal as a specimen tree, for shade, or in mixed woodland plantings, adapting well to areas with high heat.
Growing notes
Established plants are relatively hardy and can tolerate periods of low rainfall, though they appreciate some moisture. It can be propagated from seeds, which benefit from overnight soaking before planting.
