About
This deciduous or evergreen shrub or small tree typically grows 1–8 metres tall, featuring dull green, ovate leaves that may display a greyish sheen and paler lateral veins. It produces clusters of pale cream, unpleasantly scented flowers. These are followed by small, hard, subspherical fruits which ripen to a blackish colour.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in well-drained, sandy soils, this plant is suitable for areas receiving partial to full sun. It can be utilised in mixed borders, as a specimen shrub, or in restoration projects to re-establish indigenous woodland and scrub habitats.
Growing notes
An easy-to-care-for species, it exhibits high toughness and fair drought tolerance once established, requiring watering approximately every 2-3 weeks. Minimal pruning is needed to remove dead or overcrowded branches, best carried out in early to late winter.
