About
This evergreen shrub or small tree can reach up to 10 metres in height, featuring dark green, rough bark and opposite pairs of ovate leaves that are shiny above. It produces clusters of fragrant, green-white flowers, followed by small, rounded, fleshy fruits that turn black when ripe. The wood is notably termite-resistant and durable.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape, this resilient species thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil, including rich clay loams or poorer soils with good drainage. It can be used as an ornamental specimen, a hedge plant, or for restoration in coastal bushland and thickets.
Growing notes
Psydrax schimperiana is considered to have a fast growth rate and is drought-tolerant once established, needing minimal watering (every 2-3 weeks) in well-drained conditions. Propagation can be done from seed or cuttings; macerating seeds can shorten germination time.
