About
This shrub or small tree typically grows 2–7 metres tall, with opposite, simple, elliptic leaves that are 4.5–7.5 cm long, shiny, and leathery. It produces small white, bisexual flowers and broader, black, drupaceous fruits. Endemic to coastal southeastern Kenya and southern Tanzania, it thrives in seasonally dry tropical lowlands, coastal bush, and woodlands at elevations up to 725 metres.
Where it works in Kilifi
This indigenous shrub or small tree is ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, thriving in full sun to light shade and well-drained, infertile sandy soils. It is suitable for restoration plantings in dry woodlands, thickets, or as a native specimen.
Growing notes
Once established, it is drought tolerant, adapted to semi-arid conditions with moderate annual rainfall.
