About
This subshrub or shrub, typically growing 0.3–3 metres tall, is native to southeastern Kenya and Tanzania, thriving in seasonally dry tropical biomes. It features large elliptic to oblanceolate leaves, measuring 16–32 cm long and 7–14 cm wide, with sharply acuminate tips and narrowly cuneate bases. Its flowers are cream or white, giving way to glossy, oblong-cylindric fruits that ripen to purple or blue, 7–8.5 mm long, and are strongly ribbed when dry but smooth in life.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in partial shade with well-drained, organically rich, slightly acidic soil. It can be planted as an understory shrub, a specimen in a protected spot, or incorporated into restoration efforts. Ensure adequate space, given its potential height.
