About
Psychotria schliebenii var. sessilipaniculata is a shrub native to southeastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania, typically found in seasonally dry tropical biomes and evergreen forests at elevations from sea level to 442 metres. Its leaves are generally wide, measuring 7–18 cm long and 2.5–9 cm wide, with distinct lateral nerves. The plant produces red, ellipsoid drupes that are 7–8 mm long and become grooved when dry.
Where it works in Kilifi
This shrub is well-suited for understorey planting in Kilifi coastal gardens, particularly in shaded or partially shaded areas that mimic its natural evergreen forest habitat. It would thrive in well-drained, organically rich soil.
Growing notes
Requiring consistent moisture, this variety prefers damp but freely draining soil and is sensitive to cold temperatures. Established plants may tolerate brief drier periods but perform best with regular watering.
