About
This evergreen shrub or small tree typically grows 3-8 metres tall, featuring a slender stem, horizontal branches, and pale brown bark. It has glossy, leathery, elliptic to obovate leaves that are dark green above and paler below, often drooping; the Somali material of this subspecies is noted as glabrous. Panicles of small yellow flowers appear from spring to midsummer, followed by clusters of pea-sized, shiny yellow fruits that ripen to red or black, attracting birds.

Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this plant thrives in full sun to semi-shade, preferring sunnier spots in high rainfall areas and sheltered, shady positions in drier locales. It is excellent for mixed shrub borders, background foliage, or as a hedge when planted in groups, and is a must-have for attracting birds and wildlife. It adapts to various well-drained soils, including coastal dune and riverine settings.
