About
This evergreen shrub typically grows 1–3 metres tall, featuring young stems that are pale greyish-white, becoming chestnut and slightly peeling with age. Its leaves are oblong-elliptic to narrowly obovate, 1.5–8 cm long, discolorous, and often have domatia in the axils of the lateral nerves beneath. White or cream, 5-parted flowers appear in congested panicles, leading to spherical or ovoid red drupes, 4–6 mm in diameter.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden in partial to full shade, mimicking its natural habitat in coastal zones and sand dunes. It thrives in damp, well-drained, slightly acidic loamy soil rich in organic matter, making it suitable as a specimen plant, for screening, or in restoration efforts for dry shrubland environments.
Growing notes
This species requires consistent moisture but is moderately drought-tolerant once established, preferring watering every 2-3 weeks in well-draining media. It is sensitive to cold temperatures, so a warm environment is crucial. For optimal growth, use a balanced fertiliser at half the recommended rate and ensure it receives filtered or indirect light, avoiding harsh direct sun.
