About
A woody perennial, often growing as a subshrub or small shrub between 0.5 to 2 metres tall. It features quadrangular young branches covered in yellowish, subappressed hairs. Its opposite leaves are ovate to elliptic-oblong and finely pubescent on both surfaces, while greenish-white to cream flowers appear in short terminal and axillary spikes.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable species thrives in thickets, woodlands, and forests, including riverine and sand forest areas, often found in the shade of other shrubs. In a Kilifi-coast garden, it would be suitable for underplanting, mixed borders, or restoration projects, tolerating partial shade to filtered sun.
Growing notes
As a species native to seasonally dry tropical biomes, it is likely tolerant of dry conditions once established. It can be found at altitudes up to 1060 metres, with flowering typically occurring from January to February in some regions.
