About
This East African species is a scandent shrub or small tree, typically growing 3-8 metres tall, with older branchlets marked by longitudinal striations. It features bipinnate leaves with rhombic-ovate or -obovate leaflets, measuring 0.7-2.1 cm long. White flowers develop into woody, dehiscent pods, 7-11 cm long, which appear blackish when dry and have oblique longitudinal striations.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for coastal Kilifi gardens and restoration, this plant thrives in sandy or loamy soils, mimicking its natural habitat in evergreen thickets. It can serve as a screening plant, a small specimen tree, or for ecological restoration in suitable areas.
Growing notes
As a perennial woody plant adapted to seasonally dry tropical biomes, it exhibits strong drought resilience once established due to its deep root system. Leaf flush typically occurs after the dry season. Propagation is possible from seed.
