This evergreen tree can reach up to 20 metres tall, sometimes flowering as a shrub at 2-4 metres. Its compound leaves feature 4-17 pairs of oblong-elliptic leaflets, notable for white tufts of hairs found in the vein axils on their undersides. It bears small, whitish flowers, and its distinct woody capsules, about 4 cm in diameter, are red when ripe and covered with unique lobed, antler-like appendages.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to lowland coastal forests and woodlands, it is well-suited for planting in a Kilifi garden as a canopy or emergent tree, providing shade or serving as a distinctive specimen. It thrives in forest margins and understorey conditions, making it suitable for coastal forest restoration.
