About
This straggling shrub or small tree typically grows 2-12 metres tall with a much-branched, low crown. Its opposite, elliptic to ovate leaves are glossy dark green above, lighter below, often with serrated margins, and emit a distinct odour when crushed. It produces small, greenish-white flowers in terminal clusters, followed by small, round, purple drupes that attract birds and butterflies.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, this species thrives in full sun to partial shade and moist, sandy or loamy soils, tolerating salinity and salt spray. It serves well as a specimen tree, for erosion control in coastal plantings, or as part of a hedge, attracting local wildlife.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, it prefers consistently moist soil and warm, humid conditions. Regular watering is essential, especially when establishing, though it is generally hardy once settled. While not considered toxic, its seeds have a low germination rate and take months to sprout.
