About
This scrambling shrub or small bushy, soft-wooded tree features drooping branches and leaves that are unpleasantly aromatic when crushed. Its pale green, leathery leaves are broadly ovate to oblong, usually 6-9 cm long, and velvety on both surfaces with coarsely toothed margins. Small white flowers with spreading lobes appear in terminal heads, developing into ovoid, fleshy, glandular fruits with an unpleasant taste.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to Kenya, this species thrives in riverine fringes, on termite mounds, and dry rocky hillsides, sometimes forming thickets or climbing on palm trees. It prefers sunny locations but should be protected from intense midday sun, ideally planted in well-draining soil.
Growing notes
A vigorous and fast-growing plant, the Large-leaved skunk-bush requires generous watering, especially during the growing season, but the soil should never dry out completely. It is a subtropical species that prefers warm temperatures above 10°C and high humidity. While generally resistant, monitor for aphids, scale, red spider mites, or powdery mildew.
