About
This much-branched shrub or small tree typically grows 1-4 metres tall, with older stems becoming square in section and thin, white-brown bark that peels in strips. It produces oval leaves up to 7 cm long, which are often shiny above and emit an aromatic, spicy smell when crushed. The flowers are small, green-white with four tiny petals, forming loose terminal heads, followed by pea-sized, red-purple-black fruits when ripe.
Where it works in Kilifi
A common shrub in the drier parts of coastal Kenya, it thrives in arid and semi-arid bushland and thickets. It works well in a Kilifi garden or landscape in bright locations, though young plants may benefit from protection against intense midday sun.
Growing notes
This species is a vigorous grower requiring generous watering during the growing season; the soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings but never completely. It is sensitive to cold temperatures, preferring warm conditions above 10°C, and benefits from regular pruning to maintain shape.
