About
Premna hildebrandtii is a shrub or small straggling tree, often exhibiting a climbing habit. It is naturally found in swamp forests, dry coastal forests, and riverine thickets across its native range in East and Central Africa, including Kenya. The wood is hard and traditionally used for building poles and tool handles; a root decoction is also employed medicinally for stomach ache.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is well-suited for Kilifi coastal gardens, thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, consistent with its natural habitat in dry coastal forests and riverine thickets. Its straggling or climbing nature makes it adaptable as a specimen, for screening, or for ecological restoration projects.
Growing notes
Premna hildebrandtii is a fast-growing species that establishes quickly and develops a strong root system. It requires regular watering, especially during the growing season, and should not be allowed to dry out completely. As a tropical plant, it is sensitive to cold and prefers temperatures above 10°C.
