About
This plant is a climber or shrub, capable of reaching up to 10 metres in height. It features leaves that are borne on short lateral shoots. Its flowers are pale yellow, eventually developing into small, brown nutlet fruits. It naturally occurs in evergreen bushland and moist forest environments at elevations from sea level up to 400 metres in southeastern Kenya.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to coastal East Africa, this variety is well-suited for Kilifi gardens in full sun to partial shade. It can serve as a specimen shrub, a screen, or be incorporated into restoration plantings in bushland or forest edge settings, especially in well-draining soils.
Growing notes
Premna species are generally fast-growing, producing a strong root system, and require regular watering to prevent the soil from drying out completely once established. They thrive in warm, subtropical to tropical conditions, needing temperatures above 10°C, and should be protected from frost. Propagation is readily achieved through seeds or cuttings.
