About
This shrub or small tree can reach up to 6 metres, featuring branches with a velvety or rusty coating. It bears opposite, oval-shaped leaves and white, tubular flowers with a five-lobed lower lip. The plant produces small purplish-black fruits, 5-6 mm long. Native to tropical East and West Africa, it thrives in diverse lowland habitats from humid forests to dry shrublands.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this species flourishes in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. It serves well as an ornamental specimen and attracts pollinators, requiring adequate spacing for its potential height as a small tree.

Growing vigorously, Premna chrysoclada is drought tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during the growing season. It thrives in warm, humid conditions, requiring temperatures above 10°C, and can be propagated readily from seeds or cuttings.
