About
Pouzolzia fadenii is a perennial herb native to lowland rainforests of coastal Kenya, typically found at altitudes between 0 and 220 metres. Like other species in its genus, it features finely pubescent stems and leaves that lack stinging hairs. The plant bears simple, alternate or opposite leaves that are often three-nerved from the base, and produces inconspicuous flowers in small axillary clusters. Its achene fruit is enclosed by a tubular perianth, which can be smooth and broadly winged, giving the apex a distinctive bi-dentate form.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in shaded to partially shaded locations, making it suitable for underplanting in a Kilifi garden or for restoration work in naturally humid forest fragments. It prefers well-draining soil with ample organic matter and consistent moisture to mimic its native lowland rainforest conditions.
Growing notes
Pouzolzia fadenii requires consistent hydration, ideally with weekly watering, but care should be taken to prevent waterlogging. While moderately drought-tolerant, it benefits from a stable, humid environment, which can be enhanced by regular misting. Propagation is achievable through either seeds or stem cuttings.
