About

This species is a shrub or small tree, potentially reaching up to 10 metres in height, though unconfirmed reports suggest it can grow to 25 metres. It is characterised by inflorescences that are shortly pedunculate or subsessile, with the calyx and corolla being finely hairy on their outer surfaces. The external surfaces of its calyces, bracts, and sometimes corollas are notably appressed-pubescent. This plant produces edible fruit and is native to the eastern African coastal zone, thriving in riverine forests, bushland, and coastal woodlands.

Where it works in Kilifi

Well-suited for understorey planting or mixed shrubberies in coastal gardens and landscapes within the Kilifi region. It naturally occurs in riverine forests, coastal bushland, and groundwater forest patches on sandy soils or coral rag. This species prefers partial shade.

Growing notes

As a species adapted to tropical coastal environments, it requires moderate watering, particularly when establishing, and will tolerate some drought once mature. It is not frost-hardy.
