About

This scrambling shrub is recognised by its distinctive reddish-purple stems and small, oval leaves, often reaching 3-5 metres in height. It produces tiny, inconspicuous flowers followed by small, round berries that ripen from green to dark purple or black.

Where it works in Kilifi

An adaptable shrub thriving in full sun to partial shade, it tolerates a range of well-drained soils, including sandy coastal types. Its scrambling habit makes it excellent for informal hedges, screening, or as a component in a mixed border, allowing for approximately 1-2 metres spacing.

Growing notes

It is a fast-growing species that is drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal supplementary watering. Generally hardy, it responds well to pruning to maintain size and shape; note that it can self-seed readily.
