About
This robust, erect, shrubby perennial herb typically grows up to 2.6 metres tall, featuring hairy, lanceolate to ovate leaves that are arranged oppositely or in whorls of three. It produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in shades of lilac, mauve-blue, pink, white, or red, often with a yellow centre. The plant forms capsules containing small, black seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to tropical East Africa, including coastal Kenya where it is recorded as a common coastal race, this plant thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil, ideally slightly acidic to neutral. It is an excellent choice for a Kilifi garden as a specimen, in mass plantings, or as a border, attracting butterflies and other pollinators. Allow approximately 30 cm spacing between plants.
Growing notes
A low-maintenance, drought-tolerant perennial in tropical climates once established, requiring regular watering initially and then as rainfall dictates. Fertilise monthly during the growing season to encourage continuous flowering. Deadhead spent blooms to promote bushier growth and further flowering. Watch for aphids and spider mites.
