About
Pavetta tarennoides is an evergreen shrub or small tree, typically reaching heights of 2 to 9 meters. It features elliptic to ovate leaves, measuring 8.2–17 cm in length and 3.7–7.5 cm in width, with an acute or slightly tapering apex. The plant produces white flowers and its fruits are drupes containing small seeds, which are black, shiny, and approximately 7 mm in diameter.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in shaded, humid conditions, making it ideal for the understory or edges of coastal lowland forest settings in a Kilifi garden. It requires well-drained soil rich in organic matter and performs best in locations receiving bright, indirect or filtered light, rather than harsh direct sun.
Growing notes
Once established, Pavetta tarennoides requires moderate watering, preferring the soil to remain slightly moist but not waterlogged. As it adapts to seasonally dry tropical biomes, it demonstrates moderate drought tolerance once mature.
