About
Pavetta linearifolia is a shrub or small tree native to southeastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania, thriving in seasonally dry tropical biomes. Like other species in its genus, it typically features small, white, tubular flowers arranged in terminal clusters, and its leaves often display distinctive dark bacterial nodules. These flowers develop into small, pea-like fruits that mature to a shiny black colour.
Where it works in Kilifi
This indigenous shrub is ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, performing well in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It prefers bright, indirect sunlight but can tolerate partial shade and can be utilised as a specimen plant, in screens, or as a hedge.
Growing notes
Pavetta linearifolia generally exhibits slow growth when young, accelerating once established. It requires moderate watering, preferring the soil to dry slightly between watering sessions, and is moderately drought-tolerant once established. Regular pruning is beneficial to encourage a bushier form, and its leaf nodules contribute to nitrogen fixation in the soil.
