About
This robust, perennial grass typically forms dense tufts, growing up to 2-3 metres tall with stems that can root at lower nodes to form new plants. Its linear to narrowly-lanceolate leaves can be up to 35 mm wide, tapering to a fine point. The distinctive inflorescence is a large, multi-branched open panicle, featuring spikelets that range from green to purple, and a characteristically transversely wrinkled upper lemma.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to tropical Africa, this versatile grass is well-suited for erosion control, fodder production, or as a component in naturalised areas within a Kilifi-coast garden. It thrives in fertile soils and is particularly effective in shaded, damp locations under trees and shrubs, or along riverbanks. It also attracts seed-eating birds and can be planted in rows or broadcast.
Growing notes
Guinea grass is a fast-growing species, especially when adequately watered, preferring mean annual rainfall between 1,000-1,800mm, but tolerating lower rainfall down to 650mm once established. It is drought-tolerant, attributed to its deep fibrous root system, though prolonged dry periods exceeding 4-5 months should be avoided. While beneficial for forage, it can become a persistent weed in cultivated areas if not managed, and traces of hydrocyanic acid have been reported in the plant.
