Pandanus kirkii is an evergreen coastal tree typically growing 4-8 metres tall, though it can reach up to 15 metres. It is characterised by prominent aerial (stilt) roots, up to 2 metres high, that anchor the tree in sandy soil. Its strap-like leaves, up to 90 cm long, are arranged in stiff terminal whorls and have spiny margins and midribs. The plant produces cone-like fruits, about 30 cm long, which ripen to a yellow, red, or orange hue.

This species thrives in coastal environments, making it suitable for Kilifi gardens on sandy soils, especially just above the high-water mark. It can be planted as a distinctive specimen tree or utilised for windbreak and soil stabilisation due to its robust stilt roots. It performs well in full sun to partial shade.
