About

This much-branched shrub or small tree typically grows 6 to 8 metres tall, though it can reach up to 12 metres, and is semi-deciduous to evergreen. It features rough, grey bark and oblong to obovate leaves that are dark green above and paler green to silvery beneath. Small white flowers appear in slender pyramidal clusters from January to May, followed by kidney-shaped fruits that ripen to black between February and September.

Where it works in Kilifi

Native to Southeast Kenya and thriving in seasonally dry tropical biomes, this tree is suitable for small gardens. Plant in full sun in well-drained loamy or rocky soils, either as a specimen or for restoration projects.

Growing notes

Propagation from seed or cuttings can be challenging, but once established, it is likely drought-tolerant, given its natural habitat in bushveld areas. Ensure good drainage to promote healthy growth.
