About
This semi-deciduous tree grows up to 14 metres tall, often featuring a twisted bole and a light, rounded crown. It has grey, corky bark that is widely grooved and scaly, exuding a creamy resin when cut. Its leathery leaves are typically found in threes, dull green above and silvery hairy below, with distinct parallel veins. Small, cream-white flowers form in hairy sprays, leading to small, red, bean-shaped fruits that ripen to shiny black and contain a single hard seed.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for the Kilifi coast, this tree thrives in bright, direct sunlight and well-draining loam soil. It can be planted as a specimen tree for shade or as part of restoration efforts in wooded grasslands and rocky areas.
Growing notes
Germination from seed is typically good, occurring within three weeks, though seeds lose viability quickly and should not be stored. Once established, it is a hardy species that prefers dry periods between waterings and can be managed through coppicing or pollarding.
