About
This evergreen species grows as a shrub or small tree, typically reaching 1.5 to 8.5 metres tall. It is distinguished by its elliptic to narrowly ovate leaves, which measure 5.4–15.5 cm long and are acute at the tip. The plant produces slender, fragrant white flowers with a long corolla tube (7–11.5 cm) that develop into pear-shaped fruits, 3.5–5.3 cm long, appearing pale brown with white flecks when dry. The roots are traditionally used in Kenya for treating diarrhoea.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in its native range of coastal Kenya, this species is ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, particularly in shaded areas or as an understorey plant. It adapts well to sandy, well-drained soils found in coastal thickets and dry evergreen forests.
Growing notes
As an evergreen, it may exhibit leaf curling during periods of drought, indicating a preference for moderate water supply once established, especially during prolonged dry spells.
