About
Barrelier's woodsorrel is an erect, branched perennial herb, often with a woody base, growing 15-60 cm tall but can reach up to 1.5 metres. It features pinnately trifoliolate leaves, with elliptic to oblong leaflets, the terminal one being the largest. The plant produces delicate pink, purplish, or white flowers, often with a yellow centre.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable herb thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained loam soil. It is suitable for open garden beds, disturbed areas, or as a naturalised groundcover in a Kilifi-coast landscape, where it can be spaced 15-30 cm apart.
Growing notes
Growing readily, Barrelier's woodsorrel requires moderate water, allowing the soil to partially dry out between waterings, as it dislikes soggy conditions. It is a hardy perennial in warmer zones and may undergo dormancy during extreme conditions. Caution: leaves contain oxalic acid and are toxic in large quantities, especially for those with certain health conditions, and to pets.
