About
This perennial succulent shrub can grow up to 5-7 metres tall, developing a woody trunk with age. It features thick, flattened, bluish-green cladodes (pads) up to 60 cm long, which are covered in a waxy, water-repellent epidermis and can be spiny or spineless. Large, showy flowers, typically yellow, orange, or red, emerge from the cladodes in spring and early summer, followed by edible, sweet fruits that ripen to various colours including yellow, orange, red, or purple.
Where it works in Kilifi
This plant thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy or loamy soils, making it excellent for xeriscape or dry gardens. It can serve as a striking specimen, a living hedge or barrier, or for soil erosion control. Allow 1.2-1.8 metres (4-6 feet) spacing for optimal growth.
Growing notes
This is a fast to moderate-growing plant that is extremely drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal water. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot, especially in cooler periods. Handle with care due to potential spines or fine glochids.
